According to the self-determination concept, humans require relatedness, competence, and autonomy in order to function at their best.

Why do you act in the ways that you do? Also, is it possible to alter your behaviour? Every behaviour is influenced by motivation. Self-determination theory is a generally accepted paradigm for comprehending motivation and how various motivations may affect various elements of well-being. So it’s helpful to discover the cornerstones of self-determination and how to lead a more autonomous life.

The psychologists who developed the self-determination theory defined self-determination as follows: “Self‐determination means acting with a sense of choice, volition, and commitment, and it is based on intrinsic motivation and integrated extrinsic motivation” (Deci & Ryan, 2010).

Self-determination theory (abbreviated SDT) was initially introduced by psychologists Edward Deci and Richard Ryan in their 1985 book, Intrinsic Motivation and Self-Determination in Human Behaviour. Two of the four forms of behaviour regulation or motivation that they propose are autonomous, while the other two are regulated. According to this view, self-determination is based on autonomous regulation (Deci & Ryan, 2010).

  • Acting out of a sense of willingness, volition, and choice is referred to as autonomous motivation or regulation (Deci, 2017).
  • Acting out of a sense of pressure, demand, or obligation is referred to as controlled motivation or regulation (Deci, 2017).

Here are some examples of self-determined behaviours:

  • A child playing with toys for enjoyment
  • Exercising because you value the health benefits
  • Completing your chores because you understand the value of responsibility
  • Creating art for the inherent joy of it
  • Choosing a career path with a complete sense of willingness

What are the principles of self-determination?

According to the self-determination concept, humans require relatedness, competence, and autonomy in order to function at their best. Someone will be autonomously driven or self-determined when they feel connected to others, competent, and that they are behaving with a feeling of volition (Deci, 2017; Deci & Ryan, 2012).

  • The concept of relatedness describes the desire for both receiving and giving care.
  • The urge to feel effective in one’s actions is referred to as competence.
  • The urge to believe that one is behaving voluntarily and in support of oneself is referred to as autonomy (Vansteenkiste & Ryan, 2013).

According to the research, it’s critical to provide a nurturing atmosphere that meets all three of the aforementioned demands in order to promote self-determination in oneself or others (Deci & Ryan, 2012).

How are self-determination and well-being interrelated?

So why are these various forms of regulation or incentive important? Does it matter what drives someone if those actions wind up being the same? You may know from personal experience that the sort of motivation you have affects how you feel when engaging in an action.

According to research on the self-determination principle, autonomous control is associated with improved overall well-being.

A stronger sense of personal commitment, more perseverance, more pleasant sentiments, higher-quality performance, and better mental health are connected with actions that are more self-determined and less regulated (Deci & Ryan, 2000). According to studies, independent motivation also fosters more creativity and more effective problem-solving (Deci, 2012).

In light of this, learning how to raise your level of autonomous regulation will probably be beneficial. To achieve this, you should focus on developing a positive environment for oneself based on the principles of relatedness, competence, and autonomy.
