Before making your choice, do some research on what the discipline provides in terms of careers and whether you would enjoy working in that environment and setting.

Are you a gamer with an ardent love for literature, or a poet with a deep fascination with physics? Picking your college major can be perplexing when you have a variety of interests and passions that you want to hone.

This decision will dictate the trajectory of your career and is therefore important that you make an informed choice.

5 ways to simplify your selection process:

2. Look into the past and observe

Think back on your entire school journey and ponder upon which subjects you always looked forward to studying, and also the ones you dreaded. A personal struggle that I faced was liking a subject but not scoring well in it. Remember that if you like a subject enough and are passionate about it, with enough dedication, you will find it in yourself to overcome these hurdles and improve 🙂

3. Pick what YOU love

Many of us are inclined to choose majors that are traditionally thought to be academically superior than others. Every discipline has its importance. Unless you are passionate about what you’re studying, you will hardly be able to make proficient contributions to that field and your potential would go untapped and unnoticed. Remember that it is important to do well academically to further your progress, which will be extremely difficult if you are disinterested in your subject.

4. Do some homework

Before making your choice, do some research on what the discipline provides in terms of careers and whether you would enjoy working in that environment and setting. Explore the niches that it offers and try to find your particular area of interest. This will equip you to make a more informed decision.

5. Some useful advice

A valuable piece of advice that I was given by a professor was to choose a discipline of which you are prepared to face the worst and most boring aspects. Every discipline has its monotonous parts and some aspect that you will struggle with. Therefore, pick something that you are more than happy to strive for, something which for you is a labour of love.
