5 ways in which AI is transforming the education system

Excerpts from article published by India Today Web Desk

The face of the education system has undergone a sea change in recent years. The present-day educational structure is competitive, challenging, and needs to be capable of meeting international benchmarks. The emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, are changing our lives as they are being put to different purposes.

AI is making long strides in the academic world, turning the traditional methods of imparting knowledge into a comprehensive system of learning with the use of simulation and augmented reality tools. Here are some ways in which AI is transforming education as we know it:

1. Effective management of administrative tasks

Through the automation of administrative work, artificial intelligence allows ample time for teachers that they can utilise to engage with students in an improved manner and assist them through the challenges efficiently. AI helps with school admissions via the automation of the categorisation and processing of paperwork. It also helps with the grading of test papers as AI helps assess both objectives as well as subjective answer sheets.

2. Access to quality content

Automation has also made quality education accessible to a larger population in the form of smart content. Teachers can design study materials customised according to the different needs of the students in different regions with the help of evolved applications of AI. The learning material can be shared in diverse forms that may consist of virtual formats such as video conferences and lectures.

3. Personalised learning process

While in traditional classrooms, an educator may not be able to pinpoint each student’s strengths and weaknesses and provide undivided attention to them. But AI is empowering teachers to track their students’ performance and progress in real-time and address the individual needs of each student appropriately. In addition to this, with the help of AI, teachers have ample time to guide their students so that their cognitive skills see an improvement.

Besides academics, AI can also identify and streamline students’ career choices. AI helps in identifying if a student is susceptible to certain learning disabilities such as dyslexia or any other issue the child may be facing.

4. Better outreach

The incorporation of AI in the education system can help make it inclusive. The consonance among AI, Internet and mobility has brought schools into each house and even if the student fails to gain admission in any school, he/she can still study with the help of a smart device. AI is efficiently helping to reduce the impact of scarce infrastructure and non-availability of qualified or proficient professors in many schools.

5. Customised curriculum for increased employability

AI enables an interdisciplinary customised curriculum, which can be designed and tweaked to track the response of each student so as to understand what interests them the most. This mechanism is similar to the ‘recommendation engine’ that popular streaming and eCommerce sites use to suggest favorite TV shows or next purchase items. This eliminates the possibilities of students ending up in the wrong education system.

Rapid advances in artificial intelligence over the last decade have the potential to revolutionize how drugs are developed. Image source: labiotech.eu

Combining AI and Drug Discovery

Excerpts from article by Helen Albert published in labiotech.eu/ai

Drug development is a slow and increasingly expensive process. Artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to make the drug development process quicker, cheaper and more efficient.

This technology can make scanning vast libraries of chemical compounds that might be able to treat a certain disease easier, can speed up the analysis of biomedical information from the literature, and can help companies recruit the most suitable patients for clinical trials.

AI can also streamline the design of better drugs and incorporate new data, such as genomic analysis, to help personalised medicine become a reality.

There are now an increasing number of companies that are using AI to improve drug discovery and development in a variety of different ways. Here’s a list of some of the top companies in this area. The order does not reflect any ranking:

1. Exscientia was one of the first companies to apply AI technology to drug discovery. Its focus is to quickly identify and optimize drug candidates that are more likely to succeed in clinical trials than those selected by conventional means.

2. Healx uses AI to analyze extensive medical research data with the goal of repurposing and finding new combinations of existing drugs to treat rare diseases such as fragile X syndrome, Angelman syndrome and muscular dystrophy.

3. BenevolentAI has developed an AI platform that can identify new drug target candidates for any therapeutic area. The company has its own pharmaceutical team to investigate potential leads and develop their own products. BenevolentAI is working in a variety of disease areas including Alzheimer’s and ALS.

4. Innoplexus doesn’t develop its own pharmaceuticals. Instead, the firm gives pharma companies, biotechs, contract research organisations and life sciences professionals access to its data platform to help them design better drugs and improve decision-making throughout the drug development process.

5. Evaxion has a focus on infectious diseases and oncology. The company has developed two AI platforms that can be used to create immunotherapies by selecting the antigens that are most likely to produce strong immune responses against infections or cancer.

6. Genome Biologics has a focus on RNA interference therapies for cardiovascular and cardiometabolic diseases. It uses an AI platform to assist in identifying suitable drug targets and also allows 2D and 3D investigation of RNAi disease targets in a variety of animal models.

7. Novadiscovery uses data from preclinical and clinical studies to model a drug’s effect on patients and predict whether it will be successful or not at treating a specific disease. The company has worked on a wide range of indications including liver disease, respiratory disease, hepatitis, immuno-oncology, and cardiovascular disease.

8. Nuritas uses its AI platform to search and analyze large libraries to find potential drug candidates or nutritional additives. In particular, the company focuses on identifying and developing peptide drugs.

9. Turbine Simulated Cell Technologies has a focus on cancer. The company has built a dynamic computational model of human cell biology that uses AI to predict how cancer cells respond to drugs and finds new targets, biomarkers and therapies.

10. Tel Aviv-based CytoReason has one of the largest libraries of human molecular data in the world. It uses this information to create computational cell models of the human immune system to advance drug development.
