Similar to a set mind, a mindset is fixed but with the potential to change into a growth experience based on one’s experiences.

What do we mean when we talk about having a “set mind”? It refers to a person who favours maintaining the status quo. In regard to one’s attitudes, beliefs, and behaviours, there is complacency. What are the possible drawbacks of having a fixed opinion? How can a lifestyle of self-limitation result from complacency?

The negative mindset of the set mind is shown by the phrase “It is what it is.” This term does not predict a change from the existing circumstance. In actuality, the individual who is showing a strong mentality has already agreed to the circumstances they are in. Acquiescence eventually results in the phrases “Don’t rock the boat” and, even worse, “Why bother?” This encourages putting off tasks and settling for less than what is actually feasible. This constrained view of available options lowers one’s drive. The set mentality matures into a more unadaptable and intolerant attitude, which maintains the status quo and resists change.

There are several expectations associated with the human experience. Expectations of things, people, and results will eventually result in a great deal of dissatisfaction. Why is it the case? maybe because we have little control over many of life’s expectations. We are unable to change them or exert any kind of influence over them.

There will be aspects of our lives that we cannot control, no matter how skilled and effective we are. Ignoring the realisation of our helplessness to influence life’s events makes us complicit in our own annoyances (Wilson, 2021). One might develop a pattern of self-inflicted disappointments if they have a persistent fixation with life’s challenges.

Each of these elements results in a reduction in one’s ability to advance and avoid stagnation.

We know that frustration, by its very nature, is a change agent (Apter, 2014). We are inspired to move from where we are to somewhere better when we are upset. Why not use that as a learning opportunity? We might have to let go of ingrained limiting behaviours during the growing experience, such as becoming irritated about the same issues repeatedly. Although difficult, breaking these routines will be beneficial. Moving from perceiving hurdles as challenges instead of obstacles as obstacles fosters prominent sensations of self-control that are typically lacking in irritation. How can we overcome these unfavourable impressions and foster good growth?

“If you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.”—Wayne Dyer

Mindset

Similar to a set mind, a mindset is fixed but with the potential to change into a growth experience based on one’s experiences.

A mentality may be adaptive and labile without the restrictions of a fixed opinion, which allows for fresh insights and the capacity to change. It is simple to make necessary changes to one’s attitudes, beliefs, actions, and behaviours. Confidence is built through being able to change one’s thinking as needed and by embracing rather than avoiding uncertainty. By confronting one’s fear, which extends rather than confines one’s experiences, one may overcome their fear of change.

Doing new things and excelling increases one’s ability to handle challenges and difficulties in the future with more personal agency. Positivity is encouraged when difficulties are solved more frequently than they are problems. Having a growth mindset (Dweck, 2007) as opposed to a fixed mindset increases the chances that we will learn from every event, successful or not.

“I never lose. I either win or learn.”—Nelson Mandela

Improving Your Mindset

Try to flourish rather than merely get by. Recognise that you already have all you need to succeed. Like Henry Ford, keep in mind that your thoughts are the primary factor in determining your outcomes. Consider all of your options rather than simply your constraints.

Make an effort to work and learn more intelligently and effectively. “You are still learning even if you are having difficulty. You can learn from every setback, and every lesson you acquire advances your development. No one can assist you if you are reluctant to learn, but if you are determined to learn, no one can stop you ” (Daskal, 2015).

Brain signals can be altered, according to research on neuroplasticity. The majority of our obsolete messages are just brain recordings or recollections from the past that no longer hold true. We keep repeating outdated messages that impair our capacity for being in the moment. Tossing away the out-of-date set-mind messages and upgrading to our new mindset possibilities is one way to deal with this. Then, we may start to develop our ability to handle novel and difficult events tremendously.
